Diagnostics/Check Engine

A check engine light tells you that your vehicle’s computer has detected a problem. It does not tell you which part should automatically be replaced. That distinction is important.

Our mobile automotive diagnostic services in Houston use professional diagnostic equipment along with systematic testing to identify the cause behind warning lights and performance problems.

Check Engine Light Diagnostics

The vehicle computer stores diagnostic trouble codes when it detects certain faults. We can retrieve these codes and use them as a starting point for further diagnosis.

Diagnostic services may involve:

  • Retrieving trouble codes
  • Reviewing code definitions
  • Checking live vehicle data
  • Evaluating related sensors
  • Inspecting related components
  • Performing appropriate follow-up tests
  • Identifying likely root causes

More Than Reading a Code

A code identifies the system where the computer has detected a problem. It does not always identify the defective component. For example, a code involving an oxygen sensor may be caused by the sensor itself, wiring, an exhaust leak, an air-fuel problem, or another condition. Replacing the part named in a code without further diagnosis can lead to unnecessary expenses.

Systems We May Scan

Depending on the vehicle and available equipment, diagnostic scanning may include:

  • Engine control system
  • Transmission system
  • ABS
  • Airbag or supplemental restraint systems
  • Charging-related systems
  • Other compatible electronic modules
